Building Design Awards 2026
Now Open:

A Fresh Era for Australia’s Design Leaders

For nearly three decades, Design Matters National's Building Design Awards have set the benchmark for excellence, showcasing the projects, people and ideas shaping Australia’s built environment. The 2026 program is now open, bringing a refined structure, new opportunities, and a stronger case than ever for getting involved.

This year is not business as usual. The awards have been updated to better reflect how the industry operates today. It is more interdisciplinary, more collaborative, and increasingly driven by innovation under pressure. Categories continue to span and include Building Design, Interior Design, Energy Efficiency and Emerging Designs, with a stronger focus on real-world impact, sustainability and smart problem solving.

Right now, the industry is navigating rising costs, tighter margins and more demanding clients.
Visibility matters. Recognition is not a bonus. It is leverage.

Entering the awards delivers value across multiple fronts. It strengthens internal culture, gives teams a reason to celebrate their work, and provides a credible, peer-reviewed endorsement that clients trust. This is not surface-level recognition. It is a clear signal of quality.

There is also a long-term advantage. Being shortlisted or winning becomes part of your brand story. It is something you can use in proposals, marketing and recruitment for years. In a competitive market, that kind of proof stands out.

Key Dates and Opportunities

Entries for the 2026 awards close on 19 June, with winners announced across two major events:

  • West Coast Awards – 16 October
  • East Coast Awards – 24 October

If you are not entering this year, you can still get involved. Industry professionals are invited to apply as judges. It is a chance to see the best work in the country up close and includes a complimentary ticket to one of the awards events.

Why Enter

If you are doing work worth noticing, this is where it gets seen. The awards remain one of the most effective ways to build recognition, strengthen your brand and position your work at the forefront of the industry.
