Presented by Design Matters National at WA's first PERTH DESIGN WEEK, explore solutions and learn new approaches to not only take the confusion out of sustainable design across Western Australia, but to embrace it.  This seminar is specifically designed for building designers to understand how to apply NCC 2022 principles, building materials, retrofitting, construction systems and green materials available for sustainable and resilient residential design without blowing a project budget.  Presented by a notable and diverse panel of building sustainability industry and academic experts, this seminar will give you the knowledge, practical design principles and tools that are expected in today’s sustainable built environment.  An interactive session that will invite questions and open discussion between the panel and guests, prepare to be immersed in the future of sustainable building design.

Jeremy Spencer - Thermal Performance Assessor & Registered Builder – Positive Footprints
For almost 20 years Jeremy has been a Registered Builder, Thermal Assessor and Director at design & build company Positive Footprints. Positive Footprints have won multiple awards for sustainability and worked to show that energy efficient sustainable design and high performance construction is a cost effective option and can be a mainstream reality. An educator and former GreenLiving lecturer in an earlier life, Jeremy is founding member of Builders Declare, and currently sits on the Design Matters Board, the Sustainability Hub, and the NatHERS Stakeholder Consultative Group.

Professor Peter Newman - Professor of Sustainability - Curtin University
Peter Newman is an environmental scientist and the Professor of Sustainability at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. Peter has written 20 books and over 350 papers on sustainable cities and has worked to deliver his ideas in all levels of government having been an elected councillor, seconded to advise three Premiers and on the Board of Infrastructure Australia 2008-14. He is the Co-ordinating Lead Author for the UN's IPCC on Transport. In 2014 he was awarded an Order of Australia for his contributions to urban design and sustainable transport. In 2018/19 he was the WA Scientist of the Year

Adrian Fratelle – Founder of Ecohabit
As the founding director of the commercial architecture practice Fratelle Group, Adrian has more recently moved on to new challenges to create the new brand Ecohabit, delivering advanced and high performing homes. After completing his studies in the mid 90’s Adrian has worked his way through all aspects of construction from a tradesperson, site supervision, new homes sales to leading two architectural practices. It was the lack of technological advancement of building design in the early years of his career that has seen Adrian looking to advance design and construction in Western Australia, always with a view to simplifying and speeding up the build process whilst maintaining an architectural flare. A term as Board Director of PrefabAUS, enabled Adrian to gain valuable global knowledge on Modern Methods of Construction which he and his team now draw upon for all their projects.

Debbie Bute – Thermal Performance Assessor : Leading Energy | ESD & NatHERS Software Manager : Energy Inspection (BERS Pro)
Is WA ready for 7*? Is 7* the right performance benchmark for WA? Debbie Bute is an accredited NatHERS assessor and has been a member with Design Matters since 2015. She currently works for Energy Inspection as the NatHERS Software Manager and Leading Energy | ESD as their Technical Energy Compliance Manager. Energy Inspection owns BERS Pro NatHERS software which is accredited to be used to produce house energy ratings in accordance with the NCC requirements.  Leading Energy provides energy compliance reports for the building industry.

Griff Morris - Founder of Solar Dwellings 
A strong believer in thinking globally and acting locally, Griff’s interest in the health and wellbeing of the planet and its inhabitants is expressed through his leading-edge design principles and completing over 800 designs since starting Solar Dwellings. Griff sits on the Environmental Planning Committee, the Technical Advisory Committee for the Housing Industry of WA and sat on the Technical Advisory Committee for the 2nd revision for the Your Home, the Australian government’s guide to environmentally sustainable homes.  Griff is also a board member of The Hunger Project State Development for WA, an organisation committed to the sustainable end of world hunger.  7 Starts should be easy for any reasonable designer or architect, with minor implications for the clients' budget. Passive and active solar design principles, coupled with good choice of building materials.

Tristan Stanley-Cary – Registered Architect & Thermal Performance Assessor – The Study Group
Tristan is a registered architect and an accredited thermal performance (energy) assessor. Tristan has experience working on a variety of architectural projects, has consulted for energy compliance on a diverse range of projects from small additions, through apartment buildings to large commercial buildings. Tristan has lectured at TAFE in drafting and building design, and enjoys mentoring people starting out in the industry. Since April 2021, Tristan has represented WA assessors on the DMN Technical Assessor Support Committee (TASC) - the restructured advisory group formed from the amalgamation of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and the Energy and Sustainability Hub (ESH). Tristan was the energy part of the WA winning team for the true zero carbon challenge in 2022.

Tyler Jackson - Plico Energy
Tyler has worked in renewable energy sector for the past 5 years, with a passion for innovative technology that will assist with the transition to cleaner energy and more control for households.
