The design and construction of mould mitigating homes - Increased 'call-backs' regarding condensation and mould in new buildings.
A 2016 nationwide survey sent to building design and construction professionals identified that at least 40% of buildings designed or constructed in the last decade had a presence of condensation and mould. This was before many jurisdictions adopted the 6 Star regulations, which would exacerbate any problems. And 7 Star is just around the corner.
Our older and un-insulated homes had condensation and mould. But did we care? Our newer homes which are much warmer or much cooler on the inside in Australia’s temperate or hot climates respectively. Sadly, the climate change focussed regulatory framework has focussed on the reduction on greenhouse gas emissions associated with the energy needed to make our homes and workplaces thermally comfortable.
This presentation will include:
• Background theory regarding what causes condensation and mould
• Principles for new buildings
• Challenges for fixing existing buildings
• Ventilation
• Building materials
• Awareness of NCC requirements
• Awareness of personal/business risk
• Guidance on best practice methods to minimise design and construction based risk.

SPEAKER:
Mark Dewsbury - B Env. Des., M Arch, PhD, Post Doctoral Researcher
University of Tasmania
Mark has been involved in the sustainable design of commercial and residential buildings in the public and private sectors for more than 30 years. Currently a Senior Lecturer and post-doctoral researcher within Architecture & Design, at the University of Tasmania, his research focuses on methods to inform design, construction, thermal performance, indoor environmental qualities, and condensation and mould growth risk management in buildings. His research provides input for building simulation and the National Construction Code. Research collaborators include industry partners, CSIRO, and State and Federal government agencies. He is also a partner at Carawah, which specialises in low energy dwellings.
