Designing for Timber Durability and Preservation

26/09/2023 | 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM (AEST)

OVERVIEW:

From robust structural frameworks to interior elegance, timber is the heart of countless designs.
Join Dr. Woodard in exploring the core properties of diverse timber species and how they're fortified against natural challenges.

Learning Outcomes:

Timber is specified widely by building designers in a host of different applications - from functional construction structural framing to beautiful appearance products used both internally and externally. A wide range of naturally durable and treated timbers are available today to meet both the regulatory, and the actual design and durability performance requirements needed. This presentation will discuss the key timber properties of different species and how different timber products are treated to meet the different hazards they will be exposed to during use – from insects (termites), water (decay), sun (weathering) through to fire.

SPEAKER:

Dr Alastair Woodard

Alastair is the Victorian Technical Consultant for WoodSolutions (WS) - an industry initiative, resourced by Forest & Wood Products Australia (FWPA), designed to provide information on timber and wood products to professionals and companies involved in building design and construction. Alastair has a detailed understanding of the Australian building design and education sectors, a strong wood product industry network of contacts, and an extensive experience in new timber product/market development and technical timber promotion, with a particular interest in the design and development of new and innovative timber building construction systems and environmentally sustainable building materials.
